Boop is a typeface designed in 2013 by Salma Khalife and Scarlet Mounzer. The project or typeface was more of a political statement, a voice that wants to stand beyond a corrupted system.
Our inspiration was the early maghribi style, as its letters had some qualities that fit the style we want to achieve: clear, uncomplicated, with a boldness and stability that was visually impressive.
The only tools used were the rounded back of a bold pen and ink. The process was mostly experimental, but the calligraphic nasekh style proportions were taken into consideration in order to build a coherent set of letters.
As for the anatomy of these letter forms, they were characterized by a playful bulkiness and curviness combined with a studied spontaneity.
This typeface contains a solid sense of presence that can shout out on the street and deliver a social vernacular feel and message.
